The following comment appeared btl on Wings this morning and it deserves to be read by as many as possible.
How many people have abandoned political activity of any kind (and that includes just keeping abreast of developments) in recent years?
As the post-mortem examination of Saturday's BIS rally in Glasgow continues, how are citizens in general supposed to assess the current state of the independence movement?
By counting how many people were in George Square?
When we strip away the unionist presence (and fair play to them, they have every right to be there) and those who were part of the pro-Palestine gathering and those curious passers-by who happened to be in the square and SNP diehards who felt duty-bound to attend, how many are left?
How is anyone supposed to explain to the disengaged what's really going on?
If support for independence is still solid at or around the 50% mark, it certainly doesn't 'look' that way to those who form their world-view from watching mainstream media.
It's enough to make anyone despair and just give up altogether. Some, like Kevin, commit their reasoning to print. But most don't. They just turn away in silence and are gone.
And no-one can blame them.
